The Lyngen Traverse

Assemble at Lyngseidet, 15 m above the tide. The Alps here rise straight from salt water — the altimeter will barely clear 1,800 m all week and it will not matter. Skis waxed, skins checked, transceivers paired and logged by serial number. Route brief over the fjord chart at dusk.

Skins on from the shoreline birch woods. Long rising traverse into Rørnesdalen with the fjord falling away behind. Camp dug in at 1,242 m on a wind-scoured shoulder. Snow profile cut and photographed: stable, faceted layer buried deep. First night under canvas; the light never fully leaves.

Roped travel across the edge of the Jiehkkevárri icecap, the largest in Lyngen. Whiteout drill practised in earnest when the cloud sits down for an hour — bearings held, spacing held. Camp at 1,580 m in the lee of a serac line, well back from the sag. Quiet evening, hard snow.

The roof of Lyngen. Ski ascent to Jiehkkevárri at 1,834 m — modest number, arctic seriousness, sea to summit in a single view. Twenty minutes on top in a light northerly. Camp set just below the plateau shoulder to hold position for tomorrow’s descent line. Aurora minor, logged at 23:10.

The reward pitch: 500 m of consistent 30° corn snow off the plateau, skied in pairs with spotting. Regroup in upper Lyngsdalen and set camp at 1,289 m beside the moraine lake, still frozen at the edges. Skins dried on tent guys. Legs tired in the correct way. File notes brief tonight.

Last climbing day. Skin and boot to the summit ridge of Store Lenangstind, 1,666 m, the fjord on three sides like a moat. Short exposed step taken on a rope at 1:2 — the PD grade earns itself here. Final high camp pitched below the col. The traverse is nearly written.

Ski to the sea. Long descent through the birch line to Koppangen, skis off at 15 m with salt in the air. Boat transfer down the fjord to close the loop. E-03 filed: seven days, three summits, one traverse of the Lyngen crest. Transceivers checked in, batteries out. Archive closed.
